Carry was written for my dear friend and collaborator, cellist Jennifer Kloetzel. Meant to be a companion piece to Bach's Cello Suite No. 4, the harmony in my piece is built from every three or four-note chord Bach uses throughout his suite. While writing this piece, a dear friend of mine lost someone very close to them. A poem that I remembered was special to this person was e.e. cummings' "i carry your heart with me." Carry reflects on the past, on the fragility of life, and acts as an accompaniment for my friend's loved one as she moved from this stage of life onwards.
